SARAJEVOWhere even strangers can feel at home. Neither geographically expansive nor charaterised by large buildings, the city retains a prticular, arresting charm with its abundance of busy cafe’s and abiding tradition of hospitality. Sarajevo’s Bascarsija (Old Town) – maybe hard to pronounce but it is certainly one of the most impressive and charming market centres in the Balkan. Bascarsija has been a trading and meeting place since the 15th century as caravans from Asia Minor, Dubrovnik and the west met here to trade their wares.
MOSTAR – Beautiful medieval town, set in the valley of the Neretva River. The old Mostar bridge is a UNESCO World heritage site and a mayor tourist destination in this part of Bosnia (Herzegovina). It was completed in 1566 after nine years of planning and building. The bridge was destroyed as a result of the conflict in Bosnia and opened in 2004. The cobbled old town, called Kujundziluk, stretches down both sides of The Old Bridge and is filled with small shops selling carpets, jewellery, traditional garments, scarves and pipes.
MEDJUGORJEin 1981 six teenagers were playing in the hills between villages of Medjugorje and Bijakovci. It was there where the Mother Mary appeared to them and spoke to them. Since then, it is estimated that over 15 milion people have visited that tiny place. Regardless of one’s believes it is an interesting story...
NEUMAlthough its only a tiny strip of the gorgeus Adriatic, Neum has become a major seaside resort. Ideally located between Split and Dubrovnik, and just a short distance to Mostar and Medjugorje, Neum is an inexpensive holiday spot for fun and the sun.
SUTJESKA NATIONAL PARKSutjeska is one of Bosnia and Herzegovina’s oldest parks. It is famous for the Partizans victory over the Germans in WW II and there are large stone monuments commemorating the event. It hosts one of the last two remaining primeval forests in Europe, called Perucica. Skakavac waterfall can be seen from the look-out point – this seventy five metre plus waterfall is dwarfed by the massive blanket of green trees that cover the valley.
